Horror games to up the spook factor!
Halloween is just around the corner. And with the weekend arriving on the heels of the holiday, there are just so many possibilities of what you can fit in, this weekend. Or you can simply pick a new game.
We believe that we will be doing more of the later than the former. And it is for this reason alone, that we went hunting for some horror games to up the spook factor that we identify with the end of October.
Five Free to Play Horror Games For PC
With the month almost coming to a close, we were mainly focusing on games that fell on the lower side of the budget spectrum. And lo and behold, we came across some titles that are actually absolutely free to play. We want to spread the word about these games, because besides being free, they are also very good.
Disturbed is a horror game, in the style of a visual adventure novel. The graphics of the game are all hand drawn. In addition to that, the almost metaphorical storyline of the game is deep and it is bound to stay with you. The game is story heavy and at every point are present branching choices. The deeper you go, the more it feels like you are having a close up visual of the mind of a depressed person who is dealing with addiction. The grey landscape, the haunting soundtrack and the depressing yet stunning graphics all create a haunting that stays with you, long after it is over.
Cry Of Fear
Cry of Fear is a very popular and critically acclaimed, free to play horror game. While it is somewhat older than the others in our list, it can very well be one of the best games in the genre, ever made. The game’s action is not what you would call fast paced but its ever twisting and turning storyline, grotesque, yet uniquely designed monsters and the characters keep making you want to go back to the game again and again.
In Blameless, you play as an architect in an unfinished house, where you are being chased to death by a man wielding a knife and almost any other power tools that he finds lying about all over the place. If you ever thought that there is nothing much scary about a house under construction, we suggest you try this one out. This isn’t one very log game but you can always choose to look around. In that case, it will take you hours to finish it. This is also why you will find replaying the game again and again, is an interesting aspect to consider.
SCP: Secret Laboratory
SCP: Secret Laboratory is probably our most favourite on this list of games. This free horror game has as its main focal point the mysterious and fictional scientific facility, the SCP Foundation. Now, no one knows what the foundation does, but we do know it involves some kind of deadly monsters. The gameplay is actually very interesting and so is the premise. We think you will like this one.
No More Room In Hell
Initially released as a modification for Half Life 2, No More Room In Hell is a free to play, standalone, horror game that is based on a novel of the same name. Looking at it from the purview of a survival horror game, the game is pretty generic in nature. However, the game’s story and characters all serve as Easter Eggs that range from anything in between other zombie titles and movie references. The game allows up to eight players to play together and has two modes, Objective and Survival. If you are a fan of the genre, we highly recommend this one!
BONUS: Shadow Corridor
Shadow Corridor is randomly generated Japanese horror game. The game is entirely in Japanese and has very little English involved. Something lurks in the corridors in the game and the only objective here is “Don’t Die”. Must be pretty simple, right? No! Spooky music, amazing graphics, and the knowledge that the next corner you turn; might be your last. Not much can be said about the storyline, since it is in Japanese and even lacks subtitles. However, we can only say, this could be the best game that you come across or the hardest! While this game on the list is not free to play, we felt that this one deserves to be on the list.
In case you were looking forward to a quite night in, this Halloween but looking to spooking it up a bit, these were our recommendations. We promise that it will not be a dull day with any of them.
