Sundance is the first ever playable non-binary specialist in the Battlefield franchise.

EA has revealed the ten new specialists who will be arriving with Battlefield 2042. It was interesting to note that one of the playable specialist Emma ‘Sundance’ Rosier, identifies as non-binary. This makes them the first ever specialist in the history of the Battlefield franchise, to identify as such.

Sundance‘s bio on the official website for the game uses gender neutral pronouns to address them. And that is the only actual indication, for anyone looking, that the specialist identifies that they are non-binary.

Battlefield 2042 gives players a chance to select from ten different playable specialists to choose from. And Sundance is one of them. Their loadout will be consisting of a wingsuit. This will enable players to glide over the landscape for approaching their objectives or even fire fights. In addition to that, they will also be able to toss explosives. These explosives when thrown will jet out to the enemy’s vehicles and create significant damage to the same.

In the recently concluded open beta for the game, Sundance was not available. And players were largely unimpressed with the level of differentiation between the various playable characters that were available. So it can be hoped that this unique kit might act as some consolation for them.

Battlefield 2042's Specialist Sundance To Be The First Ever Non-binary Playable Character In The Franchise!

Battlefield 2042 does not have a conventional Campaign Mode. Hence, it is very unlikely that Sundance’s identity or their being Black will have any great significance on the storyline, as compared to their skills in combat. It is also highly possible that most players will not know about their gender identity unless they are looking for specific information pertaining to them on the Internet or check their bio on the game’s site.

Normally, EA omits information such as a character’s gender identity from their official material. This is true for Bloodhound, the only non-binary character in Apex Legends, another shooter from EA, as well. It is only their bio page that refers to their gender identity.

A few days ago, Ubisoft chose to announce their first non-binary character from Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, Osa, publicly, via the details that is present in her bio.
