Facebook is looking towards a name change and rebranding, reports The Verge.

It has been reported by The Verge, that Facebook is looking towards changing the company’s name, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg focuses on building up the metaverse. The news outlet reports that it has come across this information from a source that has direct knowledge of this matter.

As per the report, company CEO, Mark Zuckerberg will be taking up the issue of a change in the name at Facebook’s annual Connect Conference which is scheduled to be held on October 28, 2021. However, the company might even choose to unveil their plans for the same, sooner, as well.

Facebook Looking To Rebrand Its Image As Social Media Giant?

Facebook Looking To Rebrand With A Name Change- Inner

It is unknown to anyone concerned that the social media giant has long held ambitions to be known for more than as a social media platform and thereby overcome all the ills that are associated with being known for the same. This rebranding would put the social media application Facebook under the supervision of a single parent company along with the others such as Instagram, Occulus, WhatsApp and many more. Spokespersons for the company have, so far, chosen to not comment on this story.

This is not the first time that a company in the Silicon Valley has opted to change its name, in order to expand its interests. It is quite common amongst the companies there to do so, for a host of different reasons. Thus, while Facebook‘s decision to do the same might seem sudden, it is nothing out of the ordinary, to say the least.

Amongst the more recent such cases of companies undertaking such a change, the most famous instance would be that of Google, which had in 2015, reorganized itself entirely under a single parent company Alphabet Inc., and thereby indicating that it was no longer limited to being a search engine alone. It is now a conglomerate that has several companies under it that develop everything from health technology to driverless cars.

Similarly, in 2016, Snapchat had rebranded itself as Snap Inc. and had started calling itself a “camera company”. It was in the same year that the company had then released the first pair of Spectacles Camera Glasses.

As per, The Verge this new name for a Facebook company, is a closely guarded secret and not many of the company’s senior level executives also have a wind of it. Over the years, the company has been known for steadily building the groundwork for the next generation in technology. It has more than 10,000 employees who are currently involved in building hardware for consumers like the Augmented Reality glasses.

Facebook Planning On Changing Its Name: Reports

The company has also, over the summer a team dedicated towards developing its metaverse. Facebook has also promoted its head of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, Andrew Bosworth, as its Chief Technology Officer. It was only a few days back when the company announced that it would be hiring 10,000 employees more, who would be working on the metaverse, in Europe.

The term metaverse was first used by author Neal Stephenson in his sci-fi novel Snow Crash. The term was used to indicate a virtual world where humans could escape to, in order to run away from the dystopic real world. The concept is not very widely understood and seeing how one of the most controversial companies has been using the term quite frequently, the question that remains to be asked will diving into it be worth it?
