The official artwork for God of War Ragnarök has been revealed. And the Internet has been in a tizzy, ever since.

After almost about a year, since it was announced, fans finally got to witness the first look of God of War Ragnarök at the Sony PlayStation Showcase 2021. The game, like its predecessors, will be witnessing a series of conflicts amongst the Norse pantheon of Gods.

Soon after the first trailer for the game was revealed, Sony’s Santa Monica Studio released the character art for Kratos, Atreus and Tyr. The studio also revealed the character arts for the Norse Gods and Giants that will be playing a significant role in the game’s storyline.

While the trailer only gives a brief look at the characters, the studio took to its official Instagram account to share the first look at all the pivotal characters. While many of the characters from the previous game will be seen once again, a host of new characters will also be joining the melee. The post on Instagram also reveals the actors who would be portraying the characters alongside their designs.

God Of War Ragnarök: Reveal Trailer

Character arts were revealed for Kratos, Arteus, Tyr, Freya, Thor, Angrboda, Brok, Sindri, Mimir and Durlin. Fans were quick to take notice and the Internet has been flooded with comments ever since. Two characters that have been receiving much attention are that of Thor, the Norse God of Lightning and the Giant, Angrboda. While most fans have well-received the characters and their representation, highly appreciating the studio’s interpretation, some have called them out for the same.

If you haven’t checked out the art yet, Thor, portrayed by the actor Ryan Hurst, has been represented as a pot-bellied incarnation, which many have termed as a God Bod. This representation is quite unlike yet another representation that was popularized by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU had the chiselled and stunning actor Chris Hemsworth portraying the Mjölnir wielding Norse God of Thunder.

Another character that has been receiving much attention is actor Laya DeLeon Hayes‘ portrayal of the Giant Angrboda, who according to the Norse mythology is also the wife/mate of Loki, the Norse God of Mischief. Many have been calling out the studio for representing her as dark skinned.

As has been the case, in the past as well, video games have often come under fire for their representation of the characters, especially the female characters. However, with the Internet criticising the portrayal of Thor with the pot-bellied, God Bod, which is poles apart from a rugged and chiselled Chris Hemsworth, and a dark-skinned Laya DeLeon Hayes portraying Angrboda, we once again are left wondering how vain can we be? To focus on the looks and skin tone of characters in a video game, criticising them for their appearances alone?

Addressing the controversy surrounding Angrboda’s skin tone, one of the writers of the game, Matt Sophos states that it was entirely the studio’s interpretation of the characters and their ideologies that are being reflected in the characters. He took to Twitter, where in a series of tweets he explains that the games are not 100% by the Edda (two Medieval Icelandic literary works, the basis of Norse mythology) but their own interpretation of it.

We certainly loved the character arts for God of War Ragnarök that were earlier revealed by Sony’s Santa Monica Studio. And if you haven’t had a chance to look at them, you can check it out right here. Let us know your thoughts and how you liked the character arts in the comments below.

God of War Ragnarök is being developed by Sony’s Santa Monica Studio and will be published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is the ninth in the ongoing God of War franchise and the second that is based (loosely) on the Norse mythology.

God of War Ragnarök will follow the protagonists, Kratos and his now teenage son, Arteus, as they once again set forth on their quests. The game, based in ancient Norway, will be focusing on Ragnarök, a series of events that had been predicted in the Norse mythologies to bring about the end of the world.
