It can be a delicate business to sue another company for infringing on IP such as ideas in a game or even game mechanics. And while it might seem to be a herculean task, even for a company like Krafton, it seems like the company is bent upon trying to take down all the battle royale clones that gained popularity, following the rise of PUBG.

However, the Korean publisher intent upon taking down all those games which seem to directly infringe upon its IP. The latest company that is now on Krafton’s target is Sea Ltd., better known as the parent company of Garena Online, the developers of Garena Free Fire.

Now, while we know it is a delicate business to another company for infringing on IP like ideas or game mechanics because there is only so many elements about a game that can be copyrighted. And hence, to even stand a chance at court, the claim for infringement must show plenty of evidence of wholesale copying.

And on comparing PUBG with Garena Free Fire, it is not really very difficult to see the glaring similarities. Krafton has gone into excruciating detail, to list and outline all the details of the alleged infringements.

The lawsuit cites dozens several instances such as the parachuting mechanics in the game and the congratulatory “Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!” that flashes on the screen, on winning a match. One of the most amusing and perhaps the most noticeable instance, is the use of a frying pan in both the games as either a piece of indestructible weapon or a melee weapon. According to the claims made by Krafton, the usage and the design of the article has been lifted entirely from its own game, PUBG.

It is however, not just Sea Ltd. That Krafton is focused on. It is also Google, YouTube and Apple that have also been named in the lawsuit. This is because they hosted Free Fire and profited from as well as contributed towards its commercial success. Sea Ltd., on its part has, however, claimed, according to Polygon, that “Krafton’s claims are groundless”.
