Steam guidelines update reveals it will ban games allowing cryptocurrency or NFT trading.

Steam’s guidelines and rules have been updated. As per the updated rules and guidelines, the platform has decided to ban games that allows for trading in cryptocurrency or NFT, or have been built based on blockchain technology.

Steam has posted an update on its onboarding page meant for Steamwork users and the platform’s partners. A line there has clarified that parent company; Valve will soon be banning from the platform NFT trading games.

Under the “What You Shouldn’t Publish On Steam” heading, a new rule has been added. It states that “applications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs” shouldn’t be published or distributed on that platform.

Steam Bans Games Allowing NFT and Cryptocurrency Trading

Following this update, several game creators have been reporting that the games that have been utilising NFTs have been removed from the platform. One of them being the makers of Age of Rust. The makers took to the game’s official Twitter account to announce that the platform “will be kicking all blockchain games off the platform, including Age Of Rust”.

The makers further state that they understand that their “point of view is that items have value and they don’t allow items that can have real-world value on their platform”. Presently, there are several games on the platform that have, in their gameplays, tied in NFTs with cryptocurrency.

Besides this update for rules and guidelines for Steamwork users, Valve has not yet clarified its stance on games having NFTs. We will be posting an update on the same, once the company reveals more information.
